In fifty years, Japan has been transformed from a devastated country to a major industrial power. The lifestyles of Japanese people have changed substantially. Living in air-conditioned houses fitted with sophisticated electrical appliances such as television, stereo systems, kitchen appliances, refrigerators and computers, Japanese men and women now enjoy comparative luxury and the greatest longevity in the world. Car ownership has soared, and mass production has made daily life convenient and comfortable. At the same time, these changes and a population explosion have created a demand for massive amounts of energy, a demand which fossil fuels, hydroelectric and atomic power strain to supply.
