When the stormy waves of global-wide deregulation rolled in to Japan, the oil industry was one of many of those industries that had to "change" to handle the demanding situation arising from the deregulation to stay competitive, which they had never experienced before. In the midst of such a situation, Nippon Mitsubishi Oil Corporation (NMOC), also known as Nippon Mitsubishi, was formed from a merger between Nippon Oil and Mitsubishi Oil in April 1999. The two companies merged aiming at becoming a comprehensive energy company centered on petroleum (about 50% of Japan's primary energy) retaining large-scale natural gas and coal resources overseas. In need of establishment of the new company identity, the company announced publicly right after the merger its company vision "If no Japanese company takes responsibility for the energy necessary for every day's life in Japan, what is the use?" emphasizing the oil company's intrinsic responsibility for the stable supply of energy source to public, with the corporate slogan "Your Choice of Energy." NMOC then introduced the new brand "ENEOS" for its nationwide network of 13,000 service stations on July 1, 2001, with the intention to ensure Japan―a country short of natural resources―stable energy supplies further into the 21st century. ,
