The Taiwan High Speed Rail (Taiwan Shinkansen), which connects Taipei and Kaohsiung (distance: 345 km) in 90 minutes, is under steady construction to meet the scheduled commencement of the service in October 2005. Japanese Shinkansen 700 series trains (nicknamed "Nozomi" in Japan) will be delivered to Taiwan for the Taiwan Shinkansen on the basis of the core system contract signed in December 2000. Under the contract concluded by the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC; Chairman and CEO: Nita Ing), primary contractor, and the Taiwan Shinkansen Corporation (Tokyo Headquarters; President: Kazuo Sato), a Japanese consortium consisting of seven companies: Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., Toshiba Corp., Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., Mitsubishi Corp., Marubeni Corp. and Sumitomo Corp. will deliver, in addition to passenger cars, a signaling system, a communication system, and an operation control system. Technical support will be supplied by Central Japan Railway Co. and West Japan Railway Co.
