Recent Trends in the Development of Low-Emission and Fuel-Efficient Vehicles in Japan

As the developed countries have already set the framework for strengthening their exhaust emissions and fuel economy regulations in the future, the automobile is now entering an era of diversification and reformation. Both gasoline-engine and diesel-engine vehicles will optimize combinations of the three technologies related to combustion, aftertreatment and fuel by setting the improvement of fuel efficiency and purification of exhaust emissions as their priority targets. These vehicles are expected to retain their positions as state of the art technologies for two or three decades to come. On the other hand, now is the time to attempt a transition to new-concept vehicle systems, such as the hybrid and fuel cell vehicles that offer lower pollution and higher fuel efficiency than the gasoline and diesel engine vehicles. This breakthrough may be achieved by developing new technologies, which will include those of natural gas and renewable fuel usage. If such an attempt is made, it is expected that a selection of the best systems will begin some time in the decade between 2010 and 2020. As far as automobile-related environmental measures are concerned, it is essential to overcome the issue of atmospheric pollution due to automobiles before the year 2010. In the long term, technical developments should emphasize a reduction of CO_2 emissions and the efficient utilization of the oil resource, which will inevitably prove in the future to be available in insufficient quantities as well as being prohibitively priced.
