Around 20% of domestic refuse in Japan disposed of per year comprises kitchen refuse and waste from the food industry, which easily decays, has a bad odor, and sometimes causes food poisoning. Municipal solid waste, including kitchen refuse, has been mainly treated by incineration, but problems accompanying the release of dioxin-related compounds from incineration have been recognized recently. The most common request is for simply for people to reduce the amount of waste. Using this as compost, animal feed or in the methane fermentation of kitchen refuse may be alternative ways to recycle waste on a farm, but applying this in the Japanese urban system is quite difficult because there is less agricultural activity.
