We investigate the possibility of applying virtual reality technology for developing a car styling design system. In order to perfect an industrial styling design system, we need both high quality virtual space and high quality virtual objects. It becomes a critical problem if there are differences in the designed images and in the accuracy between the virtual objects and the actual products. For our first step to realize a high quality virtual system, we aimed at visual accuracy in a stereoscopic display. It is difficult to perceive the true position of each virtual object in a stereoscopic image from the clue of binocular parallax alone, this is because no account is taken of the other factors in human depth perception such as focus. In this paper, we propose a method to decrease errors between perceived distance in virtual space and real distance in computer data, by using measured human characteristics of depth perception in a stereoscopic display. We then try to apply our improved method to a car design experiment system.
