NTT has developed a technology for measuring changes in the shape of ground or buildings by using optical fiber cables as the sensors. This newly developed measurement technology is an application of optical fiber cable maintenance technology "Optical Fiber Distortion/Loss Integrating OTDR)". It involves fixing optical fiber cables on the object to be measured such as the ground or a building and measures any change in its shape or location based on the magnitude and direction of any tension applied to the optical fiber cables. Specifications have been optimized by improving the measuring accuracy of the "Distortion/Loss Integrating, OTDR" particularly for measuring distortions of structures. This development is expected to contribute greatly to the surveillance of ground conditions and the safety evaluation of buildings, where the capability of continuous observation of changes in shape has been desired for some time.
