With the construction of actual-scale plants in China, Poland and Japan, the present exhaust gas treatment technique using an electron beam can be regarded as having entered its final development stage prior to practical implementation. The final stage will be the construction of a commercial plant. It is expected that a plant for treating the exhaust gas from a 300,000 kW or larger class thermal power plant will soon be constructed and commissioned. As it has already been demonstrated by basic testing that the exhaust gas treatment technique using an electron beam is also effective for treating the exhaust gases produced by the burning of high sulfur coal which is expected to be one of the important energy resources of the future, we are at present eagerly awaiting the outcome of the pilot project in Bulgaria of the treatment of exhaust gases which contain high concentrations of sulfur dioxides.
