Freece/Portugal: Relevance of research and technological Activities for economic development in some Less-favoured European countries

Relatively large public investments are directed to the research and technological development infrastructures of the 'less-favoured regions' of the European union. The effort was initially grounded theoretically on the linear model of interlinking science, technology and the econ- omy, and emphasis was given to research infra- structures. The cases of Greece and Portugal show the difficulty of putting science and technology in direct support of economic dev- elopment.
