摘要

Originally published in 1960 and reprinted by Penguin in 2000, this book describes the historical development of our daily sanitary habits from the Classical Era to halfway through the twentieth century. Its actual starting point was an invitation, somewhere in the 1950s, to organize a feature on The History of the Bathroom at a Building Exhibition. The author, with an established reputation as a contributor to architectural magazines, developed into an amateur in the true sense of the word once the subject caught his fascination. And the book still provides an enjoyable read, if only because of its many illustrations. In chronological order, the 18 chapters of this book depict the development of our toilet habits, from the Classical Era to the 1960s. Penguin's decision to reprint this book in its original form may have been informed, first and foremost, by the (illicit) interest raised by a topic so directly related to our everyday activities in the bathroom. Yet Wright's history provides us with insights of a much wider and more interesting scope. The book particularly familiarizes its readers with the technical complications involved with what I would call our everyday domestic water management. Accordingly, it demonstrates how water is often taken for granted, but is nevertheless indispensable for the cleaning, rinsing, washing, bathing and (beyond the scope of this book) cooking associated with our daily maintenance. But most of all, this history illustrates how the particular substance of water―its fluidity and its natural capacity to pervade other substances such as wood―has presented its users with complicated practical problems, all the time.
