The primary mission of food research and engineering at the U.S. Army Natick Research Development and Engineering Center since it first opened in 1954 has been to develop quality rations in order to sustain the soldier in combat. Although there has always been food-related research at Natick, it was not until the establishment of a Food Radiation Lab in 1962, followed by the opening of Food Science and Engineering Labs in 1963, that significant emphasis was placed on food studies. The Pioneering Research Division had already been established as the primary research division at Natick when the Radiation and Food Laboratories were opened. Ever since then there have been collaborative efforts between all of these labs, with microscopy playing an important role.
