Although the Lancaster will always be remembered as a bomber, it also took on a number of special wartime missions, as well as adopting a number of disparate roles postwar. The last operational Lancasters were not retired until the 1960s.rnArguably the best bomber of World War II and perhaps even the finest bomber of all time, the Avro Lancaster quite rightfully became an aviation legend through its bombing operations. While the vast majority of these operations were flown using regular aircraft, some employed Lancasters specially built or modified -sometimes for the needs of a single raid.
