The Mitchell was pressed into RAF service during WWII under the lend lease scheme and around a thousand airframes were procured. These were examples of the B-25 C and D variants and were used operationally for the first time in early 1943 against targets near Ghent in Belgium. The raid targeted oil fields and was carried out by 180 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. Later in the war, after D-Day, the aircraft were deployed into France and Belgium in support of Allied ground forces.
