Novel approaches are necessary to fix an obsolete and effete anti-virus (AV) industry, or so the University of Calgary seems to think. It has developed a course that trains students to learn the enemy's tricks by teaching students to create viruses of their own. The corporate AV world reacted to this news with shock and indignation. Leaders of large AV corporations openly attacked John Aycock, the course professor. Some executives of leading AV firms even went so far as to publicly blacklist any student who takes the course. One angry user even threatened the professor with physical harm in a post on Symantec's public web site.
