The jury's still out on success of SP2

Service Pack 2 for Windows XP finally went public in August, generating a mixture of relief and criticism. Although most IT and security managers will welcome the enhanced security within SP2, concerns about broken applications and support overhead have been quickly raised, and Microsoft has since received some highly critical media coverage. While most large organizations have patch management processes in place to keep the patch at bay until testing is complete, those using automatic updates (AU), particularly SMEs or companies with remote users out of remote management reach, will find their systems upgraded automatically, which may cause problems. A list of more than 50 applications known to break under SP2 has appeared on Microsoft's website, along with a separate, similar-length list of those known to "experience a loss of functionality."
