In vulnerability management, automation, in its purest sense, is when you let an assessment framework make decisions about what types of vulnerabilities you validate, and how you might do so, based merely on initial guidance from the tester. The sheer volume and complexity of available vulnerabilities in today's IT systems make it such that conducting this work manually within a reasonable timeframe is a virtual impossibility.
