It is undeniable that merit is not the only factor responsible for success in organizations. The cliche "It's who you know, not what you know" emphasizes the importance of networks, politics, and other social tools of advancement. Such influences run contrary to the teachings of human resource theorists, who suggest that ability determines performance, which, in turn, determines important career outcomes (e.g., promotions, selection, and compensation differences). Nevertheless, understanding the influence of politics in the workplace is essential for the development of management theory and practice.
