Know, See, Plan, Do: A Model for Curriculum Design in Leadership Development

摘要

This paper introduced a curriculum design model for leadership development in higher education. While we chose the context of higher education, we believe corporate universities and corporate development programs could benefit from this approach as well. The model addresses the gaps in the literature and builds upon existing theory. The KSPD model is built on expertise literature that emphasizes the critical role of knowledge and skill acquisition in learning. In this paper, we applied the expertise literature to the domain of leadership development in the context of an academic environment. Our intent was not to suggest learning goals, instructional strategies or even specific content or assessment exercises. Rather, we provided the underlying process through which learning takes place and a foundation for the design of leadership development curriculum. We argued that independent of the content selected to teach in leadership development, there should be some common approach to how we teach. As leadership and management educators, one of our primary objectives is to ensure that students leave our institutions better prepared to lead and manage in complex environments. We believe KSPD is one promising way to ensure this result.
