Given the growing use of social media in the workplace and the associated risks, organizations should consider a proactive approach to ensure social media use does not damage the organization. This approach should maintain a balance between shielding the assets and reputation of the organization and the rights of employees. To accomplish this, employers should stay informed of the current, evolving laws and rules affecting social media use in the workplace. Clear social media policies and procedures are required to effectively manage the issues emerging from social media success. This article provides information on how organizations can effectively manage social media use by employees and minimize the potential liabilities. We defined social media and identified different issues arising from the varied use of social media in the workplace. Significant social media management risks were identified. Managements need to develop policies and strategies that reflect social media awareness and review their liability to third parties for employee conduct on social media sites. It is clear that organizations need to address social media issues. Ignoring behaviors associated with the use of social media may result in considerable liabilities to the organization, not to mention the grief it could cause employees.
