In 50 years' time, mariners may look back with nostalgia to the start of the 21st century as the last time when ships could sail in coastal waters relatively free of obstacles, apart from natural hazards and other vessels. By 2060, perhaps much sooner, the exposed coastal waters of Europe's Atlantic seaboard will be teeming with wind, wave and tidal generators trying to keep up with the continent's insatiable need for energy to run its computer-driven businesses and homes.
