An affecting editorial called "The Holocaust at Coal Hoist Bend" led the June 1974 issue of Safety at Sea International. It envisaged a scenario, six years in the future: a passenger vessel carrying 2,100 passengers and a deeply laden motor tanker carrying 30,000 tons of gasoline are negotiating the Panama Canal. On each vessel the pilot in charge "has never set foot onrnthe bridge of an ocean-going vessel until he was hired as a pilot-in-training by the Panama Canal Company".
