The top US maritime safety regulator has advised commercial shipowners that their best defence against a pirate attack continues to be a private security force on vessels. Speaking to reporters after prepared remarks on the state of the US Coast Guard (USCG) at the National Press Club in Washington, the USCG's commandant, Admiral Paul Zukunft, noted that hiring armed guards was expensive, but "there has yet to be a successful attack by pirates against a ship with private security teams".
