Since its founding in 1921, Lenin All-Russian Electrical-Engineering Institute has been addressing priorities in Soviet electrical engineering. Of the considerable work on converters, two aspects may be singled out: dc high-voltage transmission; and general-purpose and specialized industrial converters. World-class research has been undertaken in both areas. High-voltage transmission equipment has been developed and put into production, including equipment for the 1500-kV Ekibastuz-Tsentr dc transmission line and for the 400-kV Vyborg dc insert, as well as static-compensator converters for power lines, generator-excitation regulators, uninterrupted power-supply units for nuclear power plants and large enterprises, converters of highspeed centrifuge drives for uranium-enrichment plants, and converters for railroad systems. In the past decade, a new development has been the introduction of high-speed semiconductor components, prompting the creation of high-frequency converters, which offer important economic benefits. In the present work, we consider a promising trend in the development of general-purpose converters.
