There is a certain fascination about turning page after page and seeing only black with, for the most part, a striking image of a mineral or two sitting like an island on that flat black surface. Because the images are all "lifesized," there is a radical difference between pages in terms of the amount of black one sees versus the space occupied by a mineral photo.
