Energy assessments: December deadline

Large haulage companies must carry out energy assessments and identify potential savings by 5 December 2015. All companies with more than 250 employees, or an annual turnover in excess of €50million (£38,937,777), and a balance sheet over €43million (£33,486,489), or which has a foreign or domestic parent company large enough to qualify, must comply with the ESOS - Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme - regulations. ESOS is expected to include 7,500 companies at this stage. ESOS requires companies to calculate their annual energy usage, identify opportunities for improvement and keep evidence of their compliance. An external assessor is necessary. A submission must be made to the Environment Agency by December. It is not mandatory to act on the recommendations, although it may become so in time. However, currently, the law will work on the basis that commercial sense will drive companies to implement those financially beneficial measures.
