Gas has always struggled to find acceptance as an alternative to diesel in the UK freight market. It's a cheaper, cleaner fuel than diesel with the added benefit of quieter running, but the cost and complexity of installing a refuelling station puts it beyond all but the larger operators who are committed to converting a considerable number of vehicles to the fuel. BOC's senior development engineer Steve Hallett was tasked with producing a viable liquefied natural gas (LNG) refuelling station to serve from five to 30 vehicles. He came up with a solution based on an ISO skid unit, which offers something as close as possible to a 'plug-in and play' solution.
