2020 road collision data is challenging for many reasons - as drastic changes to transport habits make year-on-year comparisons difficult. What is clear is that vulnerable road users (VRU) are still dying, although our data below suggests that HGV cycling fatalities had already fallen dramatically long before the advent of the Direct Vision Standard (DVS). Transport for London (TfL) claimed earlier this year that three months into the enforcement of the DVS, the new regulations were already cutting road fatalities by HGVs. However, when pressed, it could not substantiate this claim. TfL states: "Provisional data from 2020 shows that 13 people walking and cycling died in collisions with HGVs and four people walking and cycling in London were sadly killed by HGVs in the first three months of 2021." This makes the Q1 2021 death rate higher than the 2020 average.
