LIGHT COMMERCIAL VANS OUT-SELL NEW CAR MARKET

While it is undeniably true that everything on the shelves of your local supermarket arrived there on the back of a truck, an increasing number of deliveries to your home will have been made in the back of a van. Which is pushing continued growth in the number of vans on our roads. The government puts that number at around 4.1 million vans on UK roads at the end of 2019, covering more than 55.5 billion miles a year. Sales in the light commercial market understandably fell around 20% last year in the UK, but it remained a strong sector of the overall vehicle parc. Indeed, for two months of last year a van, Mercedes' Sprinter followed by Ford's Transit Custom, was the best-selling vehicle in the UK, outselling the car market. This year has started in the same vein, with Ford grabbing first, second and third in the vehicle sales charts in February. What was unusual, was the fact that Ford's Transit was at number one, the Transit Custom was the second best-selling vehicle and the firm's Fiesta car was demoted to UK number three.
