The Future of BSE Risk Assessments

The BSE epidemic has led to important changes in the thinking about food safety and also to the development of new scientific methods. In early stages, claims on the safety of beef were made by British politicians that later proved to be untenable. The late recognition of the zoonotic aspects of BSE (variant Creutzfeld Jacob Disease, a human disease caused by BSE, was first diagnosed 10 years after the first case of BSE in cattle) caused a major loss of faith of consumers in the authorities.
