Introduction to Part 2 of the Special Series on Risk Regulation

In this issue of Risk Analysis, we present the second part of our Special Series on Risk Regulation. We initiated the series in response to the Obama Administration's interest in innovation, building on the "New Ideas for Risk Regulation" conference sponsored by the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) and Resources for the Future (RFF). It now seems particularly timely as economic pressures and other factors lead us to reconsider numerous regulations as well as the role of government more generally. The first part of the series, published in June 2011, included articles on the institutional and legal framework for risk regulation and the effects of regulation on the equitable distribution of wealth and health. In this second part, we consider the role of risk assessment and economic analysis in policy development.
