During the 1950s Le Corbusier's influence waxed as travel became easier and architects were able to experience many of his buildings in actuality, rather than through reproductions of photographs such as those by Lucien Herve. The Young Turks of the London County Council Architects Department produced their own version of Corb's Unite, Marseilles (1952) in their Alton West Estate, London (1959). Jim Stirling visited the Maisons Jaoul in Paris in 1954, penned a thoughtful critique in the Architectural Review, and then paid homage in the flats he designed with James Gowan at Ham Common, London (1956). The dimensions of the six houses in South Hill Park, Hampstead, London (1956), designed by Stanley Amis and Bill and Gillian Howell, were based on those prescribed in Corb's Le Modulor (1950). Le Corbusier's influence, however, spread far beyond a narrow London clique. In the ecclesiastical sphere, one of the most notable examples was George Pace's St Michael's Theological College Chapel, Llandaff (1959), pictured.
