Bauhaus primer

Say what you like about Middlesbrough - and people do - you can't fault the ambition of its new modern art and design gallery, cheekily named MIMA. Designed by Dutch starchitect Erick van Egeraat (RIBAJ Feb 07), it asked why there had not been a significant exhibition about the Bauhaus in Britain for 35 years, and then originated a show all by itself. The school's founder, Walter Gropius, was in his way a master propagandist who coined the word Bauhaus and successfully promoted it as a brand.
