Florence is undoubtedly better known for the: domes and campanili of Bruncllcsehi's cathedral than it is for its railway architecture, but the station of Santa Maria Novella, designed by the Grupo Tuscano in 1932, represented a triumph of modernism in the seminal Renaissance city. If the Italian rail-Ways' plan to create a high-speed rail network running the length of the country and east-west from Turin to Trieste goes ahead, Florence will possess a state-of-the-art station that will represent the city's 21st century design aspirations as effectively as its Adolf Loos-like version- represented those of the 20th.
