摘要

The early 1960S spawned the civil rights movement, feminism, gay and black militancy and pressure for disabled people's rights. The latter was pioneered in Britain by the architect Selwyn Goldsmith, who has died aged 78, although he always denied that his campaigning was political rather than concerned with the right to free access to buildings and places. Goldsmith, who had trained at Cambridge and the Bartlett, afterwards contracted polio which left him paralysed down one side. He subsequently joined the Architect's Journal as buildings editor. In 1963 Goldsmith published his seminal book Designing for the Disabled in association with the Polio Research Fund. The expanded second edition of the book in 1967 became known as 'the bible'in terms of guidance for provision in buildings for disabled people and gained an international reputation.
