SAINSBURY CENTRE FOR THE VISUAL ARTS, NORWICH

The triangulated steel truss system that created the 'thick wall', forming the signature component of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts was a decision taken 'at five minutes to midnight' in the design development process. The original scheme, developed with engineer Anthony Hunt, while pushing the idea of a single overarching space containing all the functions, used a more prosaic 300mm deep steel portal frame system.
