A vector network analyzer's ability to identify the characteristics of a component makes it arguably, as the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) puts it, "the most important tool of the RF and microwave engineer." The capabilities of the vector network analyzer (VNA) itself define how accurate its device characterization will be. One of the most important of these capabilities is dynamic range, i.e. the instrument's measurement sensitivity. Dynamic range is often the key determinant of measurement performance. Fortunately, it is possible to optimize the dynamic range of any VNA to achieve the best results, and with the least impact on other instrument parameters such as measurement speed. This requires an understanding of dynamic range and its impact on overall instrument performance.
