Design constraints in wide-coverage frequency synthesizers

Frequency synthesizers that generate a signal over a wide range of frequencies can be termed wide-coverage when they operate over several octaves without detriment to its merit parameters. These may be phase noise, time response and servo loop performance. Presented here are some considerations that affect the proper operation of this sub-system and impose design constraints over its building blocks, in particular the VCO.
