NOTES FROM THE COMMERCIAL ORGANICS TRENCHES

In California, and around North America, some communities are finding success in diverting organic scrap from businesses and institutions. Many of these efforts ire driven by ambitious local, regional or state goals to divert waste from landfill. These success stories provide a variety of essons for other communities that want - or need - to divert this scrap. Since the late 1990s, Environmental Science Associates (ESA) and Applied Compost Consulting, which merged with ESA in 2004, have provided assistance to local governments and businesses that wish to begin or expand the collection of organic materials from commercial sources. Based on that experience, this article provides an overview of what it takes to successfully divert these materials, including the technical and economic considerations that are involved in the development of these programs.
