Materials recovery facilities, or MRFs, employ some of the most advanced technology in the waste-handling world. These sometimes-massive facilities receive and separate thousands of tons of waste every day and can often do so with little noise or odor disturbance to the surrounding areas. But for all the state-of-the-art equipment and technical manufacturing lines housed in a MRF, often it is an accurate understanding of risk exposure that separates the top operations from those that stumble. When handling the waste stream, unexpected events happen, property is damaged, accidents occur and people get injured. When incidents do unfold, those facility managers who have taken the time to properly prepare and have partnered with the right people tend to keep functioning and provide local communities with a much-needed service. This article will attempt to broadly explain how to leverage insurance to properly address the risks that come with MRF operations.
