Introduction to the special section: Heterogeneity and university-industry relations

This special section is devoted to university-industry relations, emphasizing what we have called "2nd generation" studies. These are investigations addressing complex relationships with advanced datasets specifically gathered to look at various channels of interaction between universities and industry. The analyses in the following eight papers go beyond simple mappings of certain phenomena and discussions of whether these phenomena have negative or positive implications for science and for innovation.
