Pipe Dissection Tool

Flexible pipes such as risers are difficult to evaluate in situ, but can be evaluated by dissection before or after service. A section of the riser (e.g. 3 m) is dissected by cutting through the section lengthwise and separating individual layers that make up the pipe. The riser generally consists of many different types of layers, such as pressure and tension armour layers, polymer layers, anti-wear tape layers between metal layers etc. Dissection allows fatigue and corrosion of the different layers to be analysed in order to determine, for example, the lifetime of such risers. An accurate estimate of the lifetime of risers is very important, and extending the service life of risers can provide significant cost savings.
