Car brakes can also be called park brakes or holding brakes. In the elevator installation the car brake is responsible for holding the car, empty or full, on a landing, while the machine is switched off. The car brake often is responsible for stopping the car in case of an emergency as e.g. power failure. Car brakes are directly braking the car body, or the counterweight as well, on the guide rail of the elevator system. Because the car stops always on the same positions in the well, also the car brake brakes very precisely on the same location of the guide rail every time the car stops on a floor. To avoid that the car brake produces markings on the guide rail, the brakes are temporarily moved on the car. For example, the brakes can be located at position 1 for a first time period of service and are then moved to position 2 at the car for a second time period. Therefore, the brakes will in the second time period not touch the same location as in the first time period.
