Occupant position recognition by a camera to use in the airbag deployment

The present invention modifies the front seat passenger detection system by replacing the Passenger Presence Sensor (PPS) with camera and software. The use of camera technology can identify unsafe conditions not identified by the current passenger detection system. With this investment, the Detection Diagnostic Module (SDM) will be able to alert the occupant by visual and audible warning for unsafe condition and decide to suppress the passenger front airbag in unsafe conditions or to trigger only the first stage of the gas generator.
