p-methoxybenzoic acid, also known as p-anisic-acid, benzoic acid, sorbic acid and dehydroacetic acid are multifunctional ingredients with antimicrobial properties, and can be used in a wide range of cosmetics and toiletries. As powders with low solubility in water in their acid forms, p-methoxybenzoic acid, benzoic acid, sorbic acid and dehydroacetic acid require several steps for their complete solubilization in cosmetic formulations, which usually involve heating steps and neutralization using strong bases, as sodium or potassium hydroxide. Furthermore, the handling of solids in large scales tend to be avoided by producers due to its limitations of mass transfer and potential error associated to it when compared with liquid raw materials.
