PISTON PIP DESIGN FOR MOUNTING DUCT STRUCTURE

In an engine, a piston is used to transfer force from expanding gases in a cylinder to an engine crankshaft, via a connecting rod. Generally, the piston includes a body having a piston crown and a piston pip. Further, the engine includes a fuel injector and a duct structure. When the fuel is injected from the fuel injector, the fuel jets are channelled into several ducts of the duct structure. The duct structure helps in reducing soot generated during engine operation. However, it is challenging to insert the duct structure in engines as the duct structure is located very close to the piston pip and may contact the piston pip. In some engines, duct walls of the duct structures are made thinner than required to mount the duct structure, which is not desirable. Thus, an improved piston pip design has been developed that solves the above-mentioned problems. A design of this development is shown below.
