Flight planning: Airlines typically create a schedule of their flights using the following sequential process: 1. Determining the market to serve, the frequency and capacity. This enables their network plan to be produced which defines all the flights that will be operated by the airline. 2. Performing a fleet assignment, where the flights are allocated to a fleet of aircraft taking account of the capacity of the routes and the range of aircraft of that fleet. 3. Completing a tail assignment where physical aircraft are assigned to specific sequences of flights.
