PARTY MEMBERS AND PARTY VOTERS: CANDIDATE SELECTION AND ELECTION AT THE LOCAL LEVEL

Studying candidate selection procedures and the list orderings are important for understanding all dynamics in play in electoral systems using lists with some sort of party selected ordering. Using data from Danish local elections how political parties select and order candidates for the party list, and how this ordering fares at the election is analyzed. Overall, party members have a say in who is selected and in which order. Which candidates are elected depends primarily on whether the party runs an open or a flexible list. If a flexible list is chosen the party ordering is almost perfectly followed in the order of candidates elected, whereas an open list produces very mixed results.
