THE WIDER IMPACT OF THE 2007 SCOTTISH LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

This paper is drawn to a large extent from the Electoral Reform Society's (ERS) full report on the local elections (2008). The current work draws out the impact of the elections and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) on four areas—local government; Scottish politics: voters and parties; performance of STV as an electoral system; and electoral reform movement and arguments—and points at frequent intervals to areas for future research which have been opened up by the elections.
