This special issue consists of the best contributions to SAFECOMP 2004, the 23rd International Conference on Computer Safety, Reliability, and Security, which was held in Potsdam, Germany, in September 2004.The SAFECOMP conference series~1 is run by the European Workshop on Industrial Computer Systems, Technical Committee 7, Reliability, Safety, and Security (EWICS TC7 7). EWICS TC 7~2 was founded in 1974. It is active in the field of programmable electronic systems safety, reliability, and security. Members from many European and some non-European countries participate in EWICS TC 7, covering a large diversity of interests and affiliations. The aims of EWICS are to assess the state-of-the-art methods and tools for critical system development and maintenance in industrial environments, to develop standards and guidelines for the development and assessment of safe and secure systems, and to disseminate information and knowledge in this field. There is also a strong current of technical interchange between the members.
