Safety And Reliability For Managing Risk

This special issue collects extended and improved versions of some papers presented at the 17th European Safety and Reliability Conference, ESREL 2006, held in Estoril, Portugal, on September 18-22, 2006. The ESREL conference series began in 1990 from an initiative of ESRA, the European Safety and Reliability Association. Since the beginning, its aim has been that of providing a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss new issues and developments in the field of safety and reliability of technological systems. The disciplines typically involved broadly cover safety, reliability, risk assessment and management whereas the applications vary in a wide range of industrial, societal and governmental sectors. As a testimony of the activity revolving around the ESREL conference initiative, this special issue presents a number of topical contributions offering a modern view to safety and reliability.
